Loughborough University dates back to the Loughborough Colleges, founded in 1909. Having gained university status in 1966, Loughborough now has nearly 15,000 students, of whom almost 15 per cent are international from over 100 countries.
Loughborough is located in the middle of England and is only 90 minutes by train from London. The University’s campus is close to the town centre and a short bus ride from the railway station. The attractive campus, one of the largest in Europe, has many green open spaces.
Academic strengths
Best student experience and Outstanding support for overseas students: Loughborough won these Times Higher Awards in 2007 because the students themselves gave it the highest satisfaction ratings achieved by any British university. The top-quality learning experience and community atmosphere on campus win special praise and careers and visa advice and the welcoming Students Union are also rated highly. The Times Good University Guide 2008 ranks Loughborough in 12th place out of all UK universities while the Guardian ranks it 9th.
Only Loughborough, chiefly in recognition of the strength of its applied research, and Oxford Universities have received the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize six times. Many departments have gained a grade 5 in the UK Governments Research Assessment Exercise.
The University is divided into the three faculties of Engineering, Science, and Social Sciences and Humanities, each offering undergraduate, taught Masters and PhD degree programmes. Many undergraduate programmes offer the option of a years paid internship.
Facilities
The single-site campus has gardens, sports areas and woodland interspersed with academic buildings and student accommodation for over 6,000 students.
A frequent bus service operates between the campus and the town, and bicycle use is safe and convenient thanks to the many cycle paths.
The modern library gives access to over 700,000 printed items and electronic access to other resources. Computing services are available to all students free of charge 24 hours a day through a networked system that goes to every room in the halls of residence. Medical assistance is readily available, either on campus or in Loughborough town.
Loughborough is justly famous for sport and there are extensive sports and fitness facilities throughout the campus. These include an Olympic-standard swimming pool and athletics stadium. There are also fitness suites, gymnasiums and halls for badminton, basketball and gymnastics, plus numerous squash and tennis courts. There are also all-weather and grass pitches for football, rugby and cricket.
The Students’ Union, one of the biggest in the UK, offers facilities such as a dentists, an Advice Centre, a nursery, banks and shops.
Student life
The Students’ Union, which has over 100 clubs and societies, holds regular film shows, discos, concerts and live comedy shows.
The International Students Association not only welcomes and makes you feel at home but it also arranges many social events, including an International Day and coach trips to UK and European destinations.
Loughboroughs championship-winning Athletic Union has 54 sports clubs, enabling students to play sport for fun or at the highest competitive level.
The Careers Centre advises international students about full- and part-time working.
A professional advice service gives help on a variety of issues including visa and financial matters. Our English Language Study Unit arranges classes to help students improve their English, especially for academic purposes such as essay writing.
Many religious faiths are catered for. Enhanced facilities are planned within the new Multi-Faith Centre.
